Yemen peace dialogue set to start in Sweden tomorrow

The evacuation on a UN-chartered plane marks a key step forward in kickstarting stalled negotiations as world powers press for an end to the four-year conflict that has pushed Yemen to the brink of starvation.

Under heavy worldwide pressure, Saudi-backed pro-government forces have largely suspended an offensive launched in June to take the port city.

Representatives of the Houthi rebels, who control about a third of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, and the port city of Hodeidah, arrived in Stockholm last night after being personally escorted out of the country by the UN's special envoy, Martin Griffith.

Yemen's two main warring factions are meeting in Sweden today for the first time since peace talks broke down in 2016.

The government delegation was carrying the "hopes of the Yemeni people to achieve sustainable peace", said Abdullah Al-Alimi, the head of exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi's office.

The announcement of a deal on Tuesday to swap hundreds of detainees was hailed by the International Committee of the Red Cross as "one step in the right direction toward the building of mutual trust".

Mr Griffiths announced the sides have agreed on a prisoner exchange as a first step toward building confidence.

Dozens of wounded Houthi fighters were also allowed to leave Yemen and seek treatment in nearby Oman.

Lowcock said, however, that despite the growing generosity, "each year we see a gap between what's needed and the funding received".(ANSAmed).

But fresh fighting flared on Monday and the coalition spokesman said military operations were "ongoing".

Global support for the new peace bid has been spurred by United Nations warnings that 15 million Yemenis are at risk of starvation as the humanitarian situation deteriorates.

The UN food agency said it was planning to scale up food distribution rapidly to help another four million people in Yemen over the next two months, more than a 50 per cent rise on the number now reached.

The oil-rich Gulf emirate, which has been a mediator in the devastating conflict, hosted Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom for talks in Kuwait City on Monday.

The coalition has largely suspended its offensive on Hodeida in the face of US-led calls for a ceasefire and new peace talks.

The conflict began with the Houthi takeover of the capital, Sanaa, and much of northern Yemen in 2014.

Additional momentum has come from the mounting Western pressure on Saudi Arabia since the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the kingdom's Istanbul consulate on October 2.

Riyadh/Aden - Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to the United States Prince Khalid Bin Salman said on Wednesday that the Arab Coalition was and continues to remain committed to a political solution in Yemen despite the pro-Iranian militias' procrastination.

But the Houthis are unlikely to agree to withdraw from territory or to lay down their arms, as the Yemeni government has demanded repeatedly.

The demands are unacceptable to the rebels and subsequent global peace efforts, including three months of negotiations in Kuwait that broke down in 2016, have focused on a power-sharing government and a federal political system.
