Wisconsin Republicans to Vote on Curbing Newly Elected Democrats' Power

Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin and MI are scrambling to pass last-minute legislation to limit the powers of incoming Democratic officials before their iron grip on state governments is loosened following last month's elections.

The proposals to bolster Republican legislative power come after North Carolina lawmakers took similar steps two years ago. Nothing we're doing here is about helping the people of Wisconsin.

The protests, coming at the end of Walker's eight years in office, were reminiscent of tumult that came shortly after he took office in 2011 and moved to end collective bargaining powers for public sector unions.

The final bill will weaken Evers' ability to institute rules to enact laws and grant the legislature control of the state economic development board through September of next year, the AP reported. The legislature is also considering stripping the secretary of state's office of its oversight over campaign finance law.

The bills would also allow legislators to decide whether to withdraw the state from lawsuits, rather than the attorney general. That move is created to block Democratic Gov. -elect Tony Evers from allowing the incoming attorney general, Democrat Josh Kaul, to withdraw Wisconsin from a multistate lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act.

Republicans in several states including Wisconsin are holding lame-duck sessions to block or cripple the power of their incoming rivals, but citizen-rights groups say voters are the ones being stripped of their power. "I do not believe the originally proposed legislation was the morally correct way to proceed; the amended legislation passed today ensures legislative intent is upheld while respecting the authority of the incoming administration".

"I respect the fact that Tony Evers is the governor and he's going to be on January 7".

The Wisconsin Elections Commission is warning state lawmakers that moving the state's 2020 presidential primary would be "extraordinarily hard". But Fitzgerald said Walker and his chief of staff had been deeply involved in crafting the measures.

The Wisconsin Legislature is still considering a bill that would move the presidential primary in 2020, a move that state Sen.

Democrats and Republicans traditionally agree on time limits for debates, but Hintz said no agreement was reached for this debate. Commissioner Mark Thomsen, a Democratic appointee, called the plan "the biggest waste of money for a single person that I can think of" during discussion preceding the vote.

A news conference where Fitzgerald and other Republican leaders spoke was peppered with catcalls from protesters.

A Republican-controlled committee did not advance the plan Monday, and the panel's co-chairs said it didn't have enough votes to pass.

Once passed, they would head to Walker, who last month voiced support for some of the ideas being discussed then, including moving the 2020 presidential primary from April to March.

"Wisconsin has never seen anything like this". Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., criticized the proposals in a tweet late last week, arguing that the state's voters "made their choices at the ballot box and state Republicans need to respect the results".

As for his plan to fight the GOP-backed bills, Evers said Plan A is to kill the bills with civility and Plan B is to fight.

"Just because Republicans in Wisconsin and MI don't like the outcome of the election does not give them (the) right to put power over people and disregard the will of the voters", Post said.

"This is a heck of a way to run a railroad", Democratic Senate minority leader Jennifer Shilling said early Wednesday morning before the votes.

Republican lawmakers in Wisconsin voted Wednesday to restrict the authority of incoming Democratic Gov.

Wisconsin Democrats railed against the proposals at Monday's hearing. Jon Erpenbach. "They lost and they're throwing a fit".

Assembly Democrats filibustered for 60 straight hours in a vain attempt to stop Walker's changes, and the session ended only after Republicans abruptly called the question. Democrats blamed partisan gerrymandering by Republicans for stacking the electoral map against them.
