Trump reportedly picks Heather Nauert to be United Nations ambassador

The Trump administration will reportedly nominate State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert to replace Nikki Haley as ambassador to the United Nations next month.

A former news reporter for ABC, she joined Fox in 1996, originally as a correspondent and later as a co-host for Fox and Friends.

If confirmed, Nauert, 48, would succeed Nikki Haley, who said in October she would be leaving the United Nations post at the end of the year.

Sources told Fox News Thursday evening that he will announce his decision in a tweet Friday.

But Trump has also used the United Nations to try to advance his foreign policy agenda on Iran and North Korea.

At least three dead in bomb attack in Iran's Chabahar
A number of Iranian media have reported a vehicle explosion in the largest port city in Sistan-and-Balochistan province, Chabahar. An Iranian ethnic Arab separatist Sunni militant group and Islamic State both claimed responsibility for that attack.

Trump is expected to tweet out announcement naming Nauert as next United Nations ambassador. Trump had already confirmed that Nauert was a "very serious consideration" in early November.

The state department has made no comment.

While the senator acknowledged that Nauert does have State Department experience, he pointed out that "she has no experience as a diplomat", also arguing that she beings to the table "no meaningful experience in the government". Barred from traveling with Tillerson, she embarked on her own overseas trips, visiting Bangladesh and Myanmar past year to see the plight of Rohingya Muslims, and then Israel after a planned stop in Syria was scrapped.

The post is considered one of the highest profile positions in USA diplomacy. She hadn't specialized in foreign policy or global relations.

The current State Department spokeswoman has earned the trust of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump and her husband Jared Kushner, Bloomberg reported. All the while, she stayed in the good graces of the White House, even as Tillerson was increasingly on the outs.
