Julian Assange Rejects Deal to Leave Ecuadorian Embassy

Assange fears he could face the death penalty for his role in the USA for leaking classified information.

In a media interview, Moreno said he had received written assurances from Britain that Assange could leave the building safely.

Moreno, however, said Britain had guaranteed that the 47-year-old Australian would not be extradited to any country where his life would be in danger.

Lenin Moreno's comments in a radio interview Thursday suggest that months of quiet diplomacy between the United Kingdom and Ecuador to resolve Assange's situation is bearing fruit at a time when questions are swirling about the former Australian hacker's legal fate in the U.S.

Britain has provided enough guarantees that Julian Assange will not be extradited to any country where he would face the death penalty if he leaves the Ecuadorian embassy in London, according to Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno.

Assange's statement doesn't preclude extradition on non-capital charges, however, and on November 15, US federal prosecutors accidentally revealed that Assange had been fingered under seal in the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Moreno didn't say he would force Assange out, but said the Wikileaks founder's legal team is considering its next steps.

Red Sox RHP Eovaldi signs four-year deal
Eovaldi had Tommy John surgery in 2007 when he was a junior in high school and his second in August 2016 while with the Yankees. The Yankees spent a king's ransom last season to acquire NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton from the Miami Marlins.

Those fears were heightened when U.S prosecutors last month mistakenly referenced criminal charges against him in an unrelated case.

Assange could be questioned in the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election that brought President Donald Trump to office.

But he said Ecuador was not about to throw Assange out.

The WikiLeaks founder has been living under asylum at the embassy since 2012.

WikiLeaks has published thousands of classified USA government documents, prompting United States law-enforcement authorities to consider possible criminal charges for Assange, despite the fact that publishing leaked government documents is not a crime.

Mr Assange has denied any connection to Russian Federation. He faces charges of espionage, conspiracy, theft of government property, and computer fraud in the USA, and Donald Trump's administration has stated that the Wikileaks founder's arrest is a top priority.
