Instagram Adds ‘Close Friends’ for Sharing Content With Your Inner Circle

The app's new Close Friends feature makes it easier to restrict your Stories to a select group of people, so you don't have to worry about your boss, your parents, or random strangers having a look. You now only need to tap the green circle whenever you want to post a story to your Close Friends.

When you share to Stories, you'll see the option to share with just the people on your list. Which means that if you don't see these indicators for a certain friend, that person has not deemed you worthy of Close Friendhood.

Instagram first teased the feature, then called "favorites", previous year in response to the growing popularity of "finstas", secondary, often secret, accounts that people use to share content within a smaller circle of friends.

Unlike Snapchat's ill-fated "best friends" though, your "close friends" on Instagram are not viewable by anyone else, though you can tell when someone else has made you their best friend. But Instagram wants people to have their cake and eat it too and is now adding a new feature that will let them do that. Assuming everything on social media is public is still probably safest.
