David Attenborough's Dire Climate Warning: ‘Our Greatest Threat In Thousands Of Years'

"Right now we are facing a man-made disaster of global scale, our greatest threat in thousands of years: climate change", Attenborough told the audience.

"Carbon pollution has been rising since this government came to office and is projected to continue to rise all the way to 2030, which is as far as the government's projections go", he said, adding that "we are now pretty much the only major advanced economy where carbon pollution and greenhouse gases are going up rather than coming down".

Natural historian Sir David Attenborough listens to speeches during the opening of COP24 UN Climate Change Conference 2018 in Katowice, Poland.

The talks in Katowice - at heart of Poland's coal region - precede an end-of-year deadline to produce a "rule book" to flesh out the broad details that were agreed in Paris on limiting the rise in global temperatures to between 1.5 and 2 degrees Celsius.

Negotiators from around the world began two weeks of talks on curbing climate change Sunday, three years after sealing a landmark deal in Paris that set a goal of keeping global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

The World Bank says it will allocate $200 billion to support countries taking action against climate change between 2021 and 2025, the organization announced on Monday.

Poland is ready to take its share of responsibility for climate policy, the country's president declared on Monday.

But US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the Paris accord has dented trust among vulnerable nations, who fear there is not enough cash available to help them adapt to our heating planet.

Four former leaders of United Nations talks, including Laurent Fabius of France, who led negotiations for the Paris agreement, issued a statement urging immediate action.

The conference was also being sponsored by Polish state-owned coal company JWS, an agreement that Friends of the Earth International called a "middle finger to the climate".

"We encourage all Parties at COP24 to finalise the key details that will enable full implementation of the Paris Agreement", said Justin Perrettson, Head of Global Engagements at Novozymes and Chair of ICC's Commission on Environment and Energy.

"This is the challenge on which this generation's leaders will be judged", Mr Guterres said.

Mr Guterres called for a "huge increase in ambitions" during the negotiations in Poland, adding, "We can not afford to fail in Katowice". "Climate action offers a compelling path to transform our world for the better".

The World Bank on Monday pledged to commit as much as United States dollars 200 billion from 2021 to 2025 towards fighting the threat of climate change during the 24th Conference of the Parties (COP 24) summit here.

"Katowice may show us if there will be any domino effect" following the U.S. withdrawal, said Laurence Tubiana, CEO of the European Climate Foundation and a main architect of the Paris deal.

ICC is calling on Parties to raise the ambition of their nationally determined contributions (NDCs) to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement and foster global efforts to reach net greenhouse gas neutrality as soon as possible.

UN General Assembly president Maria Espinosa told AFP that mankind was "in danger of disappearing" if climate change was allowed to progress at its current rate.

Guterres urged developed nations to deliver on this commitment, while urging Member States "to swiftly implement the replenishment of the Green Climate Fund".
