Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa wins Walter Camp, Maxwell awards

Tua Tagovailoa will have to wait until Saturday to find out if he's the victor of college football's top prize.

Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa won the Maxwell Award on Thursday night.

He also won AP National Player of the Year earlier in the day, and is one of the favorites to take home the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. But Oklahoma quarterback Murray won the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's best quarterback, beating Tagovailoa out for that honor. They are both finalists for the Heisman, along with Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Tagovailoa won the Maxwell over fellow finalists Murray and Grier.

Murray beat out Tagovailoa and Washington State's Gardner Minshew II for the Davey O'Brien. Murray was named The Associated Press college football Player of the Year, Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018.

The victor of the award will be announced Saturday in New York City. The past five winners of the Walter Camp Award won the Heisman, while the past four Maxwell winners did the same. The Oscars of the college football world, ESPN hosted this year's college football awards show with notable players can coaches in attendance. The last Maxwell/Davey O'Brien split among quarterbacks came in 2016 when Lamar Jackson won the Maxwell Award and Deshaun Watson won the Davey O'Brien Award.

After a record-setting season, Murray is set to take home a list of awards, starting with this one. Kyler Murray transferred to Oklahoma after his freshman season, sat out a season per transfer rules and then backed up Mayfield.

Murray was Mayfield's backup last season and won the starter's job in preseason practice.

The Allen, Texas, product has completed 241 of 340 passes this year for 4,053 yards and 40 touchdowns to seven interceptions.

"It's been a long journey with a lot of waiting, but I think it's all been worth it", Murray said.
