WHO report cautions against antibiotics overuse worldwide

Mongolia's Health Ministry on Tuesday urged Mongolians to properly use antibiotics following concerns of overuse in the country.

"The over-consumption and under-consumption of antibiotics are the major causes of antimicrobial resistance", pointed out Suzanne Hill, head of the unit of essential medicines at World Health Organization, in a press release.

Anti-microbial resistance occurs when bacteria are no longer affected by the antibiotics they were previously susceptible to or when micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses and some parasites stop the antimicrobials from working against them.

In a first, the United Nations health agency said it had collated data on antibiotic use across large parts of the world and had found huge differences in consumption.

The European Region and a few developed countries have been collecting data on antibiotic use for many years, however, multiple countries face challenges such as lack of funds and trained staff when collecting reliable data.

Besides overuse of antibiotics, drug-resistant infections can also result from poor access to antimicrobials, the report warns. "There's more work needed to educate individuals, families and communities about this problem-it really is time to take antibiotic resistance seriously", Mr Morris said. New resistance mechanisms in bacteria are emerging and spreading globally, threatening our ability to treat common infectious diseases. Antibiotics for therapeutic uses in animals are classed by MPI as restricted veterinary medicines and need a veterinary prescription before use.

The discrepancies in consumption range from approximately 4 defined daily doses (DDD)/1,000 inhabitants per day to more than 64 DDD.

In surgeries including Caesarian section, Knee replacements or hip surgeries, antibiotics play a vital role in healing the wounds but on contrary to this, imagine what happens if the antibiotics never work on surgical incision (a condition when healing becomes hard ) and the wounds becoming the breeding ground for bacteria with pus.

This is complicating treatments for diseases such as Staphylococcus aureus, HIV and malaria, and drug-resistant infections are already causing up to 50,000 deaths each year in Europe and the U.S. alone.

"Antibiotics are powerful tools for fighting disease, but if used inappropriately in people, animals or other applications, it can set the stage for antibiotic resistance", said National Pork Board's Heather Fowler, DVM, Pork Checkoff's director of producer and public health. "Seek Advice" and "Misuse of Antibiotics puts us all at Risk".

World Antibiotic Awareness Week (November 12-18) aims to increase global awareness of antibiotic resistance (AMR) and to encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policy makers to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. The unregulated sales of antibiotic contribute to the overuse and misuse of these medicines, it added.
