Study finds that morning people are less likely to get breast cancer

The data from the BCAC group of participants showed that women who were morning types, also known as "larks", had a 40 per cent reduced risk of breast cancer compared with those who were evening types, or "owls".

The research, which is being presented at the NCRI Cancer Conference in Glasgow, also found that breast cancer risk increased by 20 per cent for every hour a women slept beyond the recommended amount of 7 to 8 hours a night.

"In other words, it may not be the case that changing your habits changes your risk of breast cancer; it may be more complex than that", she noted.

Cliona Kirwan, consultant breast surgeon and researcher at the University of Manchester, said: "The use of Mendelian randomisation in this study enables the researchers to examine the causal effect on breast cancer of different sleep patterns". Dr Rebecca Richmond, a research fellow with the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit at the University of Bristol explained that it's more complicated than just setting your alarm to wake up earlier.

They also found some evidence for a causal effect of increased sleep duration and sleep fragmentation on breast cancer.

Researchers then mapped the genetic variations between the earlier risers and the night owls and compared it with that to the risk of developing cancer.

Illegal border crossers now ineligible for asylum, White House says
About 4,800 migrants are sheltered in a sports complex in Mexico City, some 600 miles (965 kilometres) from the USA border. Administration officials have said existing US asylum rules encourage illegal immigration and bog down legitimate claims.

That's according to European researchers looking at International Genetic Data. Around 4% of USA cancer deaths were linked to drinking alcohol and the Breast Cancer Now charity warns that any alcohol intake increases the risk of breast cancer.

"While these intriguing results highlight the need for further investigation, changing your sleeping habits is not as easily done as other proven risk-reducing choices, as they're often part and parcel with jobs, parenting, or other health conditions", Dr. Emma Pennery, clinical director at Breast Cancer Care, told The Independent.

Breast Cancer walks, such as this one, take place around the country and aid in finding a cure and raising awareness for this disease. The World Health Organization already says disruption to people's body clocks because of shift work is probably linked to cancer risk.

Scientists at Bristol University, UK, have found that something as simple as your internal body clock (or circadian rhythm) can play an important role in how likely (or not) you are to be diagnosed with cancer.

"In terms of the implications of the research, it supports existing evidence that sleep patterns influence cancer risk, but it remains unclear how individual preferences for early or late rising interact with actual sleep behaviours", Moorthie wrote in an email.
