Norwegian frigate sinking after being rammed by tanker

One Norwegian news outlet reports that according to tracking data, the frigate's geolocation system was turned off at the time of the collision, noting, however, that the armed forces of Norway have neither confirmed nor denied that.

The Navy fears that the frigate will slip off the rocks and sink, with tugboats trying to keep it in place under the watchful eye of several Navy vessels.

The Norwegian frigate KNM Helge Instad is in danger of sinking after being rammed by an oil tanker while returning from the NATO Trident Juncture exercise, according to The Associated Press.

There were 23 people on board of the Sola tanker.

Eirik Walle, of Norway's rescue centre, told Norwegian news agency NTB that the collision caused an opening in the frigate's hull and "it is taking in more water than they can pump out". The frigate was lying in the water nearly on its side with its stern under the water.

It was being towed out of the harbour when it somehow managed to ram the frigate.

The country's coast guard said meanwhile it had detected small diesel spills in the water and it was trying to contain further pollution.

Norway has been forced to close the Sture Oil Terminal near Bergen and has started closing down the nearby Kollsness gas-and-condensate terminal - a lifeline of heating gas to Europe - after an early morning collision between a $440-million frigate and an oil tanker.

They also found some evidence for a causal effect of increased sleep duration and sleep fragmentation on breast cancer . That's according to European researchers looking at International Genetic Data.

Some 10,000 liters (2,642 gallons) of ship's fuel and helicopter fuel is reported to have leaked into the sea.

"The KNM Helge Ingstad suffered damage above and below the waterline".

The Sture Oil Terminal processes about 500,000 barrels a day of North Sea oil, including oil from the Ivar Åssen, Grane and Edvard Grieg fields.

Norway's Accident Investigation Board said a towboat was also involved in the accident.

The Trident Juncture 18 live drills concluded on November 7 in Norway.

An image of the ship tipped to one side was posted with the comment.

Images of the frigate published online and broadcast on television showed the frigate was partly underwater and had been moved near the shore.
