FDA could ban some e-cigarette flavors next week

Since 2017, FDA had said that e-cigarettes are a potential to put adult smokers off cigarettes, but in FDA warned the industry about the increasing use of e-cigarette among teenagers.

The restrictions would prohibit convenience stores and gas stations across the country from carrying the nicotine filled vapes.

A senior FDA official said details of the ban would be announced next week, and that menthol and mint flavors would be exempt, The New York Times reported.

- They were initially marketed as an alternative to smoking cigarettes, even a way to quit smoking altogether but these days, you might be more likely to see someone puffing on a e-cigarette than actually lighting up.

The crackdown comes as federal health officials say flavored E-cigarettes can be very addictive and they've become hugely popular with minors.

"E-cigs have become an nearly ubiquitous - and unsafe - trend among teens", Gottlieb said in September.

Preliminary government data showed e-cigarette use rose 77% among high schoolers and almost 50% among middle schoolers in 2018, meaning that 3.5 million minors were vaping in early 2018.

The letters suggest that FDA might ban flavored e-liquids if insufficient steps to curb youth use are not taken. He said that could easily take another 20 years before they find out the type of impact it is having on teens.

Juul, which has more than 70 percent of the nation's e-cigarette market and has become ubiquitous in many high schools and middle schools, submitted thousands of pages of marketing documents and related materials.

Representatives from Altria, British American Tobacco, Imperial Brands and Japan Tobacco did not respond to requests for comment Thursday evening. The agency is also considering requiring lower levels of nicotine in cigarettes, although some companies have questioned how much authority the FDA has to impose tougher limits.

Today, FDA officials confirmed to the Journal that the agency is going ahead with its steady push against the minty products - as the tobacco industry pushes back.
