Americans rally in Vancouver in support of special counsel Robert Mueller

Last year Sessions recused himself from overseeing the Mueller probe, which has been a constant source of anger from the president.

The demonstrations were launched nationwide in response to Attorney General Jeff Sessions' resignation at the request of President Donald Trump, who replaced him with Sessions' chief of staff Matt Whitaker, who has a history of being critical of the investigation.

The protests come a day after Trump effectively fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a move many see as clearing the way for Trump to go after Mueller.

In an interview with Reuters, Clovis said Whitaker is "a wonderful man" and "a dear friend". Further, Trump argued that Whitaker was originally Senate-confirmed as a US attorney under the Bush administration over a decade ago. He said Democrats were concerned about what the Trump administration might do next concerning the special counsel probe: "Anyone writing even a dime store novel knows what the next couple of steps are on this".

Whitaker, before working for Sessions and after serving as a US attorney, led a conservative watchdog group and was known to take a dim view toward the Mueller probe.

Answering allegations Thursday that the White House had used a clip edited by a notorious right-wing conspiracy theorist, Trump spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said: "We stand by our statement". "We prosecuted the largest number of violent offenders and firearm defendants in our country's history", he said in his resignation letter.

The crowd chanted "Enough is enough" while standing in the shadow of a 20-foot Trump "baby" balloon that swayed in a chilly breeze. Augusta protesters challenged the legality of Whitaker's appointment by Trump. Congress must act to ensure that Special Counsel Mueller can do his job without interference.

Now that the House of Representatives is in the control of Democrats-who will support the Mueller investigation with their subpoena power-the president clearly feels increasingly threatened. A Justice Department spokesperson has indicated that Whitaker will be assuming the full scope of the attorney general's responsibilities-including, it would seem, direct supervision of the Mueller investigation.

PM Imran to depart for Malaysia at end of November
While welcoming Imran Khan , he said, "Pakistan China relations have already been strengthening, and now gained momentum". "I want to make that clear in unequivocal terms".

The Democrats said they also want the Justice Department to protect the integrity of Mueller's investigation and to preserve relevant documents.

Trump had repeatedly criticized Sessions for recusing himself from any investigation into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel's Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation.

The president lambasted Sessions for recusing himself from decisions about the federal probe into Russian meddling, an inquiry the president has regularly lambasted as "fake news" and a "witch hunt".

Senator Ron Wyden speaks at an anti-Trump protest at the Portland waterfront Thursday evening. Among them was U.S. Sen.

After recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe, the staunchly conservative Sessions spent his time ramping up efforts to combat violent gangs, drug use and illegal immigration - all key components of Trump's law-and-order agenda. More than 20,000 people RSVP'd for the Manhattan march.
