Washington Post pushes United States govt to demand answers on Saudi journalist

Flight records reportedly show the group flew into Istanbul on two private flights Tuesday, and the delegation was at the consulate at the same time as Khashoggi.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called upon the Saudi Arabian government "to support a thorough investigation of Mr. Khashoggi's disappearance and to be transparent about the results of that investigation".

"We are hoping against hope that Mr Khashoggi is unharmed and will soon return to his writing desk", the Post said.

Riyadh has denied Khashoggi was killed or detained on its Istanbul premises, and claims that the veteran journalist left the consulate shortly after entering. CNN reports that 15 Saudi nationals visited the consulate the same day as Khashoggi and have since left the country.

Khashoggi's disappearance is likely to further deepen divisions between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Khashoggi spent a year ago in the U.S. in self-imposed exile, after he fled the kingdom amid a crackdown on intellectuals and activists who questioned the policies of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He claimed that Khashoggi had left the building not long after he entered earlier this week.

Now Turkish authorities are saying there is evidence to suggest the journalist never left the building and was murdered there. That's what we are becoming in Saudi Arabia and we are not used to that.

That kind of big-time money is essential to the crown prince's ambitious plans to develop the kingdom, to diversify the economy beyond the oil.

During the interview last Friday Jones berated Herron, asking "who do you think you are?" repeatedly. He also said he was not a bully and refuted accusations of misogyny.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia relations are already at a deep low.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia faced increased scrutiny over Khashoggi's disappearance from officials in America, the kingdom's longtime ally.

The image was given to the Post by someone close to the Turkish investigation, and released by the USA daily soon after Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan challenged the Saudis to prove he left the consulate unharmed. Saudi Arabia's consul-general told Reuters on Saturday his country was helping search for Khashoggi, and dismissed talk of his possible abduction.

During a press conference in Hungary on Monday, Erdogan said he himself was following the investigation, saying it was his political and humanitarian duty. "Don't you have cameras and other things?"

The Saudi ambassador was summoned by Turkey's Foreign Ministry to urge "full cooperation" in the probe of the journalist's disappearance, according to the Anadolu news agency on Monday.

The official also said that a team of Saudi investigators arrived in Istanbul Saturday at the request of the Saudi government and with the permission of Turkish authorities. "We are aware of the latest reports and are working urgently to establish the facts, including with the government of Saudi Arabia".

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said the investigation was "continuing intensively", and that the Vienna Convention allowed for consulates to be searched by the authorities of the host country with the consent of the mission chief. Also, Ankara has continued to encourage Saudi investments in Turkey, with the Saudis eyeing especially the real estate sector.

Mr Khashoggi was last seen visiting the consulate last week and Turkey says he may have been murdered there.
