Was Your Facebook Hacked? Here's How to Find Out

The company revealed last month up to 50 million users were affected by the hacking.

Users will see something like this if they've been affected by the recent Facebook hack.

According to Facebook, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is presently investigating the matter, but directed the company not to discuss about who may be behind the attack.

Facebook said that for a second group of 14 million people, the attackers accessed information including "username, gender, locale/language, relationship status, religion, hometown, self-reported current city, birthdate, device types used to access Facebook, education, work, the last 10 places they checked into or were tagged in, website, people or Pages they follow, and the 15 most recent searches".

The company's initial estimate was that the recent attack affected nearly 50 million accounts, a number it revised down on Friday.

Fortunately, all third-party applications and a range of first-party apps including Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp and Oculus remain completely unaffected by the breach.

Facebook will follow-up with customized email messages to the 30 million users who were affected to explain what information the hackers may have stolen and with tips as to how people can protect themselves from suspicious emails, texts and phone calls.

The loophole was being exploited between 14 September and 25 September - at which point Facebook noticed, and closed the loophole within 48 hours, resetting the tokens in the process.

But statements from Indonesian officials made it clear Widodo and his government were disappointed by the Australian stance. Netanyahu says the deal does not go far enough toward preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapons capability.

The attackers then used a portion of the 400,000 people's lists of friends to steal access tokens for about 30 million people. "Access tokens are the equivalent of digital keys that keep people logged in to Facebook so they don't need to re-enter their password every time they use the app".

Meanwhile, another expert on cybersecurity, Sanjay Kaushik said that as a result of the attack, hackers can potentially hack into Facebook users' bank accounts, steal their identities etc.

A new Facebook vulnerability was discovered and stomped out two weeks ago, with the social media site claiming up to 50 million accounts could have had personal information exposed.

“We now know that fewer people were impacted than we originally thought. Users can also check here to see if they were affected.

At the time, CEO Mark Zuckerberg - whose own account was compromised - said attackers would have had the ability to view private messages or post on someone's account, but there's no sign that they did.

"This doesn't sound very targeted at all", he said.

Facebook isn't giving a breakdown of where these users are, but says the breach was "fairly broad". The company said that there is also a possibility of smaller-scale attacks that used the same kind of vulnerability.
