UPMC confirms 3 suspected cases of rare disease that paralyzes children

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh confirmed on Tuesday evening that three children suspected of having acute flaccid myelitis are being treated. Potential causes can be viruses, environmental toxins and genetic disorders, the CDC said. While rare officials over the USA are dealing with a spike in cases.

All the children showed systems of a respiratory illness the week before developing symptoms of AFM. "Now you're finding cases in Canada, you're finding cases where people are looking hard for children with this basically, paralysis-like illness".

In one case, doctors at Lurie Children's Hospital and specialists from the U.S. Centers from Disease Control and Prevention have diagnosed 2-year-old Julia Payne with the rare nervous system disease.

A 2-year-old girl from Batavia is facing a long, hard recovery after contracting a rare polio-like disease that has been reported in children across the United States.

The cases are from individuals younger than 18 years of age and from northern Illinois, the Illinois Department of Public Health said Wednesday.

With cases on the rise, parents like Wells say she'll keep those symptoms in mind.

"These are all children under five", said Chas DeBolt, a senior epidemiologist for vaccine-preventable disease at the Department of Health.

We've been reporting about the polio-like illness affecting two children here in Chicago, nine in northern IL and others across the country, but how concerned should parents be about the spread to their children?

The children were hospitalized after experiencing "sudden onset of paralysis of one or more limbs".

Outside of IL, there are now a few dozen cases of AFM in the United States.

There is no treatment other than managing each patient's symptoms.

"The patients are now undergoing diagnostic procedures and treatment", said Andrea Kunicky, a spokeswoman for UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, where the children are being treated. This does not include all of the 14 cases announced by Colorado, as some of those cases were confirmed after September 30.

Though the CDC says it's not necessarily proven to guard against AFM, they recommend frequent hand-washing with soap and water.

Six is the highest number of cases Minnesota has ever seen.

Two cases were reported in King County. One hundred forty-nine cases were reported in 39 states in 2016 and 22 cases in 17 states in 2015.
