U.S. vice president says China interfering in American politics

Amid unprecedented tensions between the two nations, Pence accused China of trying, among other things, to influence the midterm elections to the extent that all the efforts perpetually undertaken by malicious Russian actors to obfuscate American minds and undermine United States democracy "pales" in comparison.

"To put it bluntly, President Trump's leadership is working".

"China wants nothing less than to push the United States of America from the Western Pacific and attempt to prevent us from coming to the aid of our allies", Vice President Mike Pence said at the Hudson Institute.

China hit back furiously on Friday, branding Pence's accusation "ridiculous".

Vice President Mike Pence is accusing China of trying to undermine President Donald Trump as the administration deploys tough new rhetoric over Chinese trade, economic and foreign policies.

"This is nothing but speaking on hearsay evidence, confusing right and wrong, and creating something out of thin air", Hua said in a strongly worded statement.

A trio of Democratic senators on the Senate Intelligence Committee has written a letter to Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats requesting "additional information" about President Trump's accusation, made last week at the United Nations General Assembly in NY, that China has been "attempting to interfere in our upcoming 2018 election".

"The Chinese side is firmly opposed to it", she said.

"The worldwide community has already known fully well who wantonly infringes upon others' sovereignty, interferes in others' internal affairs and undermines others' interests".

Pence also said China's navy engaged in "reckless harassment" this week when a Chinese naval vessel came within about 40 meters of a USA ship in the South China Sea. China responded with $60bn in tariffs on American products.

Pence also denounced Beijing's crackdown on minority Muslims in the Xinjiang region.

"To that end, Beijing has mobilized covert actors, front groups, and propaganda outlets to shift Americans' perception of Chinese policies", Pence said.

"What the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country and the American people deserve to know".

No administration official has offered evidence that China is seeking or has sought to weaponize hacked, politically sensitive information, as Russian Federation did during the 2016 presidential election.

Speaking on behalf of the White House, he held up the recent clash between U.S. and Chinese warships in the South China Sea as an example of Chinese "aggression".

"Despite such reckless harassment, the United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever worldwide law allows and our national interests demand", Pence explained. "We will not be intimidated; we will not stand down", he says.

Pence called on one firm in particular to stop cooperating with China.

Can the U.S. and China resolve their differences?

In what was billed as a major policy address, Pence sought to build on Trump´s speech at the United Nations last week in which he alleged that China was attempting to interfere in the pivotal November 6 midterm elections.

They also said it was the first time a senior U.S. official had delivered such a "broadside" against China on an array of issues.

The speech, which will likely strain relations further, came days after a Chinese military vessel almost collided with a US Navy ship in the waters around the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
