The storm is expected to be a Category 2 when it makes landfall, according to the National Hurricane Center, though forecasters haven't ruled out the possibility of it being a Category 3 storm.

The center of Michael is expected to move across the Yucatán Channel - a strait between Mexico and Cuba - Monday, slowly making its way across the eastern Gulf of Mexico through Wednesday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles to the northeast and southeast of the center.

The NHC says hurricane conditions are expected over parts of western Cuba, and that the storm is forecast to become a hurricane. Storm surges are forecast to reach as much as 11 feet in some areas, with Indian Pass to Crystal River expected to see seven to 11 feet storm surges, while areas around Tampa Bay could see a storm surge reaching two to four feet.

In light of the storm, Florida Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum suspended his campaign activity to address preparations for the storm, according to CNN. "If this storm hit Panama City, Tampa could still have storm surge".

The National Hurricane Center has issued a Hurricane Watch for portions of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend area.

Outer bands from Michael are expected produce as much as 4 inches of rain through Tuesday in the Florida Keys, one of several areas in the state devastated by Hurricane Irma past year.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Leslie is hanging around in the middle of the Atlantic. It is moving to the east-southeast at 13 miles per hour, with this general motion expected to continue for the next several days.

Further strengthening is forecast as it moves northward across the Gulf of Mexico.
