Taylor Swift statement inspires voter registration surge

The president, who has historically been a fan of the singer, told reporters on Monday that he likes her music, but "about 25 percent less now". I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country.

According to Vote.org, there was a significant increase in voter registration after Taylor Swift waded into politics. By comparison, the site registered 56,669 new voters registered the entire month of August and 190,178 in September.

On Sunday, Swift broke her political silence with an Instagram message.

Kamari Guthrie, the director of communications for Vote.org, told BuzzFeed News that the organization was "up to 65,000 registrations in a single 24-hour period" since Swift's post.

After Taylor Swift posted a rare politically charged Instagram post on Sunday, in which she urged her fans to vote in this year's upcoming midterm elections, Vote.org has reportedly seen an unprecedented spike in new voter registrations.

President Trump, naturally, weighed in on the matter: "I'm sure Taylor Swift doesn't know anything about [Blackburn]. I can not vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love".

It should be noted that there is often an influx of people registering to vote just ahead of deadlines.

"He followed up that tweet yesterday with one directed at Marsha Blackburn, Tennessee's Republican senator Marsha Blackburn, that cleverly references Swift lyrics: "[Blackburn], look what you made her do. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me.

The Speak Now singer said she was a supporter of gay rights and women's rights, and against racism.

Swift wrote that the Tennessee Republican's voting record "appalls and terrifies" her, noting that Blackburn opposes reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act and supports businesses that decline to serve gay couples due to their religious views.

In addition to Bredesen, Swift endorsed Democratic U.S. Representative Jim Cooper for re-election in a Tennessee congressional race.

Bredesen, a former Governor of Tennessee, thanked Swift for her endorsement on Twitter, writing that he was "honoured" to have her support.

"In the past I've been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions", Swift wrote in an Instagram caption.
