Tomorrow, October 10, is Mental Health Day - a day recognised by the World Health Organisation. A petition for that is going to be presented to the Senedd on World Mental Health Day on Wednesday.

Because it's not over yet - we still need to get this issue debated in parliament, and ultimately for the law to be changed.

Theresa May will announce an annual "state of the nation" report on young people's mental health and reveal Tory MP Jackie Doyle-Price as the first-ever suicide prevention minister. The day is observed on October 10th every year from then on.

"We're not experts in dealing with mental health issues, but there are those who are, so we try to normalise that discussion [and help] people reach out", he explains.

Over half (54%) the people who had ever been homeless had a disorder, almost three times the rate of people who had not.

"Employees and direct customers are becoming increasingly aware that some insurers and employers go that extra mile to build in added-value services, such as mental health support, within their policies". Moreover, half of all mental health problems in adulthood have their onset during or before adolescence.

In a survey by CV Library, the respondents who identified having a mental health problem, 89% said it impacts their life. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, in 2015, Medicaid covered 21 percent of adults with mental illness, 26 percent of adults with serious mental illness and 17 percent of adults with substance use disorder. And hidden, because stigma keeps people from seeking help or getting adequate treatment in rich and poor countries alike, closing doors that might otherwise be opened to people who are suffering so desperately.

Officials said teachers would be expected to help young pupils to cope with modern pressures, while schools would be offered tools to help them assess pupil wellbeing.

In fact, there has been a rise in the time children have to wait before they are given treatment. "Yet, those struggling with mental health problems are still being marginalized". For example, children with conduct disorder are twice more likely to drop out of school, four times more likely to become addicted to drugs and twenty times more likely to end up in jail.

Dr McNamara noted the timeliness of Mental Health Awareness Week coinciding with Teagasc's Fodder and Finance Budgeting Week, during which Teagasc advisors will be available to visit farms and give practical advice about feeding, fodder production and financial budgeting to both Teagasc clients and non-clients.
