Pant gets ODI call as India prepare Dhoni's succession plan

India and Windies will be locking horns in the five-match ODI series after the conclusion of the ongoing Test series. Hardik Pandya & Kedar Jadhav, who both picked up injuries during the Asia Cup, continue to be on the sidelines. In so doing, Thakur becomes the 294th Test player in Indian cricket history and his first match in the whites comes after two years with the team but on the sidelines.

Rishabh Pant who debuted for India in the fifth Test match against England has been the in-form batsman for India right now and is likely to feature in the side in the first ODI in Guwahati. Khaleel Ahmed has also been included on the back of some good performances at the recently concluded Asia Cup. Rohit Sharma, who captained India to an Asia Cup triumph, is the vice captain for the ODI series. The spin attack was retained, with Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal completing the trio.

"We all know that Dhoni will play till the World Cup but there is no harm in grooming Pant, who could be a terrific No.6 or 7 batsman, who has the ability to finish games", a senior BCCI official privy to selection matters told PTI.

It remains to be seen whether Pant gets a place in the starting line-up.

The selectors have also recalled Mohammad Shami and have given a chance for young Rishabh Pant to cement his place in the ODI XI. The last three ODIs are scheduled to be played in Pune, Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram.
