NOAA Says It’s Category 3 With 120 Mph Winds, Storm Surge

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued from Fernandina Beach Florida to South Santee River South Carolina.

STORM SURGE: The combination of a risky storm surge and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be flooded by rising waters moving inland from the shoreline. This is a life-threatening situation.

This storm has the potential to be a historic storm, please take heed.
We are also working with federal, state and local officials to provide public shelter and accommodate those evacuating from other states. Showers and storms are expected to stick around through Friday, with some sunny conditions returning for the weekend.

The National Weather Service office in Tallahassee issued a dramatic appeal for people to comply with evacuation orders.

Hurricane Michael was expected to strengthen on Tuesday in the Gulf of Mexico, taking aim at the Florida panhandle, where residents were implored to get out of harm's way ahead of life-threatening waves, winds and rains. A northward motion is expected through tonight, followed by a northeastward motion on Wednesday and Thursday.

As Hurricane Michael spins in the Gulf of Mexico, colleges in its projected path are closing campuses.

Michael threatens to become the most the most intense hurricane to hit the Florida panhandle since 1851, according to Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University.

The National

Data from a NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near 100 miles per hour (155 kph) with higher gusts.

This image captured by NASA shows Hurricane Michael, while still a Category 1 storm, as it moves through the Gulf.

Forecasters expect Hurricane Michael to grow stronger still as it crosses the Gulf of Mexico on its way to Florida's Panhandle.

With a low barometric pressure recorded at 919 millibars, the measure of a hurricane's strength, Michael stood as the most powerful storm ever to hit Florida's Panhandle. Tropical-storm force winds extending 185 miles (295 kilometres) from the centre were already lashing the coast. The water has the potential to reach the following heights above ground if peak surge occurs at the time of high tide...

Michael also ranked as the third-strongest storm on record to make landfall in the continental United States, after Hurricane Camille on the Mississippi Gulf Coast in 1969 and the so-called Labor Day hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys.

Gadsden County sheriff's spokeswoman Anglie Hightower said a "male subject" was killed by a tree toppling onto his house in Greensboro, Florida, near the state capital, Tallahassee, in the first report of a fatality from the hurricane. Just as Northern politicians are judged on how they handle snowstorms, their Southern counterparts are watched closely for how they deal with hurricanes. A tropical storm watch was also issued for the eastern coasts of Georgia and SC. Storms with cloud top temperatures that cold have the capability to produce heavy rainfall. The NHC forecasts up to 8 inches for the panhandle, southeast Alabama, and parts of southwest and central Georgia. Forecasters said tornadoes could be spun off by the storm, and 3 to 6 inches of rain could cause flash floods as it barrels over a corner of the country still recovering from Hurricane Florence.
