Nikki Haley Steps Down as UN Ambassador

U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley is leaving the administration at the end of the year, she and President Donald Trump announced Tuesday.

Haley, who called herself a "lucky girl", said she was leaving because she needed to take time out after an intense six years as governor of SC - which included a hurricane, a major flood and mass shootings - directly followed by two years at the United Nations.

Haley discussed her resignation with Trump last week when she visited him at the White House, Axios news site reported.

After almost two years as one of America's top voices on foreign policy, the 46-year-old SC native will leave at year's end with a strong global profile - and a reputation for standing up to the mercurial Trump.

UN Ambassador Nikki Haley is tendering her resignation, marking the latest shake-up in the turbulent Trump administration just weeks before the midterm election. "Hopefully, you'll be coming back at some point".

Trump said she would leave at the end of the year.

Dina Powell, a former Goldman Sachs executive who served in the Bush White House and State Department, and later as Trump's Deputy National Security Advisor, was one of the first names to be uttered as the next possible United Nations ambassador.

"I don't have anything set on where I'm going to go", Mrs Haley said.

U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Nikki Haley meets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at his office in Jerusalem, June 7, 2017. Thank you for representing the values common to Israel and the United States. "Countries may not like what we do, but they respect what we do".

Mr Trump said that he and Ms Haley, who has been touted as a candidate for higher political office, had "solved a lot of problems".

With limited foreign policy experience, Haley was seen as a surprising pick for ambassador.

With news of Nikki Haley's surprise departure from her role as ambassador to the U.N., Republican lawmakers and other ambassadors took time to praise her leadership and "moral clarity" in her Cabinet role. But Haley isn't a hardcore Trump loyalist, so why would he trust her with the Russiagate probe?

In April, she clashed with the White House when a Trump aide suggested she had prematurely announced a new round of sanctions against Russian Federation. She quieted rumors by declaring she had no intention to run for president in 2020, and instead promised to campaign for Trump.

National security adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were both reportedly caught off guard by the abrupt resignation.

Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, thanked Haley for her support of Israel, which he said helped change the Jewish state's status at the world body.

There is no evidence, however, that the scrutiny of those flights had anything to do with Haley's decision to leave her diplomatic post.
