Michael Now A Hurricane, Threatens Florida Panhandle

Michael emerged Sunday as a tropical storm with winds of up to 50 miles per hour. Its center is located 500 miles south of Appalachicola and is moving north at 9mph.

Tropical Storm Michael has turned into a hurricane and is expected to strengthen rapidly before hitting Florida this week, bringing with it winds of at least 160 kilometres per hour and life-threatening flash flooding.

A hurricane watch is now posted for the northeast Gulf Coast from the Alabama/Florida border to Suwanee River, Florida.

Michael could strengthen into a major hurricane with winds topping 111 miles per hour (178 kph) by Tuesday night before an expected strike Wednesday on the Panhandle or Big Bend, according to the National Hurricane Center.

In what appeared to be an off-script moment, Scott described the dynamics of storm surge: It moves in fast and leaves just as quickly, taking with it anything that isn't anchored.

The National Hurricane Center has warned that a "life-threatening" storm surge is likely to strike the Panhandle.

He also stated in his message that there was reason to believe that Tropical Storm Michael could become a Category 3 hurricane, but it is unknown if weather officials have confirmed that possibility. Another Watch is in effect for the Alabama-Florida border to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Florida has already declared an emergency in 26 counties.

This time around, Gillum says he and Governor Scott have talked about the city's needs more than once.

Interim Emergency Management Chief Steve Litschauer said several county and Anna Maria Island officials had a conference call with state National Hurricane Center partners Monday to discuss the county's response to Hurricane Michael. Scott advised Gulf Coast residents to prepare for possible evacuation orders, and he put more than 5,000 National Guard soldiers on alert.

"So, whatever we're doing, we've got to do something different", said the governor in 2016. RAINFALL: Michael is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 3 to 7 inches over western Cuba and 2 to 4 inches over the Yucatan Peninsula and Belize through Tuesday. The latest, 12z operational run of the European model shows Michael reaching a central pressure of 943.8mb shortly after noon on Wednesday, before making landfall along the Florida coast.
