Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Who debut was fantastic - but it made one mistake

Jodie Whittaker's turn as the timelord was well-received by critics, as well as fans in the United Kingdom who tuned in in droves to the new season of "Doctor Who".

After months of anticipation there she was at last, bursting into our living rooms, Doctor 'Who in female form for the very first time. It's also worth noting that Whittaker's debut was not only better than Capaldi's first episode as the Doctor, but it also topped the first episodes of both David Tenant and Matt Smith.

Regeneration episodes are always a tricky litmus test for a new Doctor - the new actor spends much of the episode in a manic daze as the new regeneration (and new performer) gets used to moving around in their new skin. No TARDIS, no sonic screwdriver, just her trying to figure out how to stop an alien race from "hunting" a human being as a target. And that's maybe for the best.

And, for the first time in the show's 55 year history, Doctor Who - a super-smart force of nature who can change appearance (and gender) by regenerating when near death - will be a woman. Chris Chibnall and company managed to give us an episode that did its job and kept us intrigued for the rest of the season.

Whittaker is not the first northern Time Lord - Manchester-born Christopher Eccleston kept his native accent when he played the ninth Doctor in 2005 - but with a supporting cast of northern co-stars and Bradley Walsh sporting a cockney inflection to boot, the latest aural landscape all became a bit much for some. We wanted to make a series that was very inclusive because for people like me, we're all very new Whovians as well. "And I have to hold my nerve and trust all these new instincts, shape myself towards them". I mean, genuinely. I love her.

But that's not the case according to Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio , who was asked by French paper Journal du Dimanche for his take on the situation.

"I grew up as a fan of comic books", he says, adding, "this is the victory, the geek has inherited the earth".

"It was a feeling", she said, more than a specific look.

What we have in the new Doctor is something akin to the character of Wonder Woman; a fantastical woman moving through the modern world completely untethered by any of the expectations or restrictions all other women have to negotiate and/or work to reject. "Well, I will have by the time we get to the top".

"Don't be scared. All of this is new to you, and new can be scary".
