Google+ will be shut down following security bug

Google said it found no evidence of data misuse.

Google is expected to announce the breach on Monday, as well as its plans shut down Google+, according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to the Journal, Google's legal and policy team warned senior executives at the company that disclosing the security flaw could lead to "immediate regulatory interest".

Google said in the blog post that it "discovered and immediately patched" a bug in March 2018 that potentially allowed app developers to access profile data from users that had not been marked as public. But a two-week-long review of Google+ found that up to 500,000 users may have had their data exposed to developers of 438 applications. That includes details like email addresses, gender, age, images, relationship statuses, places lived and occupations.

Google says it hasn't found any evidence that developers were aware of the bug, so it's unlikely that anyone abused it.

A Google spokesperson cited "significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers" expectations" along with "very low usage' as the reasons for killing off the service. In the company's own words, "90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds". Google executives were concerned about appearances, particularly as Facebook is under fire after an analytics firm allegedly misused the data of tens of millions of users. In July, the company was criticized after reports that employees for a third-party email app could read our emails if we integrated those apps with our Gmail account.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted the latest findings on this device , but with the event being held tomorrow we now know even more. A list of specs shows that the device will have a "full-range speaker for crystal clear sound" and 'far-field voice recognition'.

Google will also "limit the apps that may seek permission to access your consumer Gmail data", while Google Play will limit which apps that can ask for a user's phone (including call logs) and SMS data.

Monday's report comes in the wake of Google CEO Sundar Pichai upcoming testimony before Congress over concerns the search engine is bias against conservatives.

Google Plus launched in 2011 as the advertising giant grew more concerned about competition from Facebook, which could pinpoint ads to users based on data they had shared about their friends, likes and online activity.

Attempts to set up brand new avatar-friendly social networks have, so far, fallen flat due to the critical mass problem. Google account permissions will have more granular controls for each permission an app requests (see above).

To make the closure of the service as seamless as possible, Google says it'll implement a "wind-down" period over the next 10 months with the goal to have everyone off Google+ and officially pull the plug by the end of August 2019.
