German train station closed following reports of hostage situation

Cologne police say they believe the man holding the woman hostage at a pharmacy inside the station is working alone, but have been unable to confirm this. Police said only that he was injured during the police operation to free the woman.

Police said on Twitter that they were on the scene and were clarifying what was happening. Police said the situation was considered "under control" and there was no immediate suspicion of a link to terrorism.

Cologne police closed parts of the western German city's main train station after a man took a woman hostage in a pharmacy inside.

"We are in contact with the man", police spokesman Christoph Gilles told broadcaster n-tv.

There had been reports of shots fired, although police later said this was not the case.

German railroad operator Deutsche Bahn tweeted earlier that some of the station's tracks were shut down temporarily and trains were being canceled or delayed.
