Fixed Windows 10 October 2018 Update Released to Insiders for Testing

Apart from these, Microsoft has also released Windows 10 cumulative update to version 1703 Build 15063.1387 (KB4462937), and version 1607 Build 14393.2551 (KB4462917), which is only available for Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Education editions as version 1607 reached the end of service on April 10, 2018.

The user configured one or more of their Known Folders (Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, Videos, Camera Roll, etc.) to be redirected (KFR) to another folder (device drive, external drive or a OneDrive folder).

According to Cable, the root of the issue was new code that Microsoft implemented to remove duplicated known folders when Known Folder Redirection (KFR) is enabled. However, that didn't go quite well, as many problems began arising for users who were updating to the newest version of Windows 10.

We have fully investigated these issues and developed solutions that resolve all three of these scenarios, so the "original" old folder location and its contents remain intact.
Some people who chose to install it through Windows Update soon reported that their personal documents folders had been wiped clean.

Microsoft has now fixed this problem, and Windows 10's October 2018 Update should stop deleting these "old" folders full of files. So, if you moved your Downloads folder to D:\Downloads but still had a C:\Users\Name\Downloads folder with files inside it, Windows 10's October 2018 Update would remove the original folder and the files inside it.

Microsoft has stated that they are using file recovery tools to recover user's deleted files.

Microsoft recommends that any users affected by the bug should call their local Microsoft support number, and technicians will be able to assist users with recovering any data that's been lost.

The fixed versions of Windows are getting floated in Microsoft's Windows Insider Program, which is a program for software testers.

"To help us better detect issues like this, today we have enabled a new feature in the Windows Insider Feedback Hub", stated the blog post. While we can not guarantee the outcome of any file recovery work, if you have manually checked for updates and believe you have an issue with missing files, please minimize your use of the affected device and contact us directly at +1-800-MICROSOFT or find a local number in your area.
