Update: Authorities in Texas say a woman who left a toddler alone on a stranger's doorstep could face charges of felony child endangerment.

"The caller advised that she heard her doorbell and a knock at the door", Lt. Scott Spencer said Thursday.

That was at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, according to a statement from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

The woman then knocked on the door before turning around and running away, leaving the boy behind at the doorstep.

Authorities say the father of the child was approached by a media partner Thursday morning as he was leaving his home and was asked about the child in the video. The incident lasted less than 30 seconds.

The resident of the home called 911.

Spencer said the child was not dropped off as planned as the mother was admitted to hospital, therefore she arranged a friend to drop the boy off at his father's house. Child Protective Services took custody of the child and brought him to a foster family.

She was trailing the 2-year-old boy, who has since been identified as Royal Prince Simmons, along in one hand, dragging him along the drive, and had a monkey-shaped backpack in the other, the Daily Mail reports.

A spokeswoman for Child Protective Services told the Chronicle that the child was "safe, healthy, no signs of abuse and is happy", and that the department was investigating the circumstances around his care.

The homeowner did not recognize the child or the woman seen in the doorbell surveillance video.

She has multiple tattoos on her right arm that can are visible in the video. "It was very alarming and it was very disturbing and my heart was hurting for that child", Spencer said.

Deputies said the woman who abandoned the boy Wednesday evening was supposed to drop him off at his father's home but had the wrong house.

The sheriff's office said it had identified the woman who left the child but that it had not spoken to her yet.
