Drew Brees passes Peyton Manning's record as Saints beat Redskins

He needed 201 yards to surpass Manning's mark - the TD gave him 228 yards on the night and the Saints went on to win the game, 43-19. He has 499 career touchdown passes. They committed dumb penalties - safety Montae Nicholson shoved a Saints player after a Ryan Kerrigan sack that would have forced a punt.

Quarterback Alex Smith struggled against the Saints' defense. A few minutes later he connected with Smith on a 35-yard touchdown and when all-everything Taysom Hill scored on a 1-yard run to the right side the rout was on. He finished the game completing 26 of 29 passes for 363 yards and three touchdowns.

The pass-catchers didn't get away unscathed, either.

"I don't know if that will ever sink in", Brees added.

It's not just about winning and contending in an NFC East that doesn't look quite as tough as everyone thought it would be this season.

It's hard to imagine or remember a worse loss in the coach Jay Gruden era; not just by margin of victory, but for the team's utter incompetence. But Brees has slung the football around with the best of them.

A minute before the final whistle, the Portuguese had looked left to see the Stretford End arising. Instead, he claimed the criticism was more of a problem for players who froze under the spotlight.

Brees then removed his helmet, saluted fans and exchanged hugs on the sideline with his wife, Brittany, their four kids and Saints coach Sean Payton. The ball caught by Smith was given to Pro Football Hall of Fame President David Baker for display in Canton, Ohio.

This was the fifth straight game Washington hasn't scored a touchdown in the third quarter, dating back to previous year.

He finished with 53 yards rushing and 20 receiving. Not to mention, recent retirees such as Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. "That combination - those are two real good running backs".

The 39-year-old has continued to play at an elite level despite being in his 18th season as he has thrown for 1,295 passing yards on a 75.8 percent completion rate with eight touchdown passes to zero interceptions while holding a 115.3 passer rating.

Instead, they came out flat.

Brees passed Favre's total on a 6-yard pass to Alvin Kamara during the second quarter.
