Donald Trump publicly swears in Brett Kavanaugh after sexual assault controversy

President Donald Trump, right, applauds as Justice Brett Kavanaugh hugs his wife Ashley Kavanaugh, following a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony of Kavanaugh as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States conducted by Justice Anthony Kennedy in the East Room of the White House today in Washington.

America's controversial new Supreme Court Justice, Brett Kavanaugh, was given a swearing-in ceremony last night.

"I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the pain and suffering you have been forced to endure".

Trump showed he still considers the nomination row a political battle.

On Monday, Trump kept up attacks on Democrats for opposing Kavanaugh, pressing on an issue that Republicans have used to energize their voters.

But after being sworn in, Kavanaugh struck a markedly more conciliatory tone. After thanking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley for their leadership during the contentious confirmation process, he praised the senators who had supported him. "That process is over", he said.

It also comes in the final run-up to midterm elections on November 6.

The president's rendering of a verdict on the sexual assault allegations risks further antagonizing political opponents at a moment that the "Me Too" movement demands accountability for sexual misconduct. "So I don't know how people are going to react to it".

Kavanaugh moved to the Supreme Court after spending 12 years as a judge on the influential U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, building a conservative judicial record.

One of the women accusing the judge, Prof Christine Blasey Ford, said Mr Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a house party in 1982 when they were high school students.

No concrete evidence was produced to back up the searing accusations, which Republicans described as a dirty tricks campaign.

The other eight justices also were at the White House on Monday.

Kavanaugh, whose bid to join the top U.S. court almost failed after a California professor accused him of assaulting her when they were in high school, said he would enter his new job without bitterness despite a political fight that he told lawmakers had destroyed his family and his name.

Questions from Kavanaugh and Justice Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump's two high-court picks, suggested they could vote against the Trump administration and side with a criminal defendant from Florida who is fighting an increase in his sentence from just over six years to possibly more than 15 years.

"I´ve always been told it´s the biggest thing a president can do and I can understand that", he said.

"Say it loud, and say it clear: Kavanaugh's not welcome here!" they chanted, dressed in long red robes and white hats in temperatures slated to reach 80 degrees. By the way, given the volume and shrillness of anti-Kavanaugh protests - from his original hearings all the way through to his delayed confirmation - this is an interesting detail, isn't it? The result is a tacit endorsement of Kavanaugh's ruling on the limit of executive power in agency law, one that sets a precedent for future court cases unless the Supreme Court chooses to revisit it.
