Banksy pulls off one of the greatest art pranks of all

For an artist who's known for his stunts, this could be Banksy's most flawless art world prank.

The graffiti artist Banksy published a video detailing how his now-infamous artwork destroyed itself after being sold at auction. The spray-painted and acrylic piece depicted a little girl extending her arm out for a heart-shaped balloon, floating far beyond reach.

Banksy bragged about his latest stunt in a post on Instagram, where he wrote, "going, going, gone".

Sotheby's European head of contemporary art told the press: "We've just been Banksy'ed".

Is it really credible that Banksy would give the painting away with an embedded, remote-controlled, battery-operated shredder, that would activate 12 years later?

It will go to auction on November 19 in Los Angeles, alongside other works by the mysterious street artist.

While Banksy's stunt has been called a conceptual master stroke, pulling it off was no easy task.

It opened with the caption: "A few years ago, I secretly built a shredder into a painting".

The influential painter pulled off one of the greatest pranks in the history of fine art.

International Monetary Fund predicts India will grow at 7.3% in 2018-’19
She declined to comment on the recent market rout, but said USA equities and overall stock prices "in general have been extremely high".

Banksy's works have often commented on the ridiculous nature of the contemporary art world, and the increasingly high values of his own works. "In many cases, if you remove the frame you violate the artist's wishes and destroy the artwork", the statement added.

Never had we seen such a scene during an auction.

He said the auction house was still "busily figuring out" how the transaction for the now radically altered work will play out.

The auction house said it was "in discussion about next steps" with the buyer, whose identity was not disclosed.

Another 20 percent of people think Banksy is an artist called Robin Gunningham and 13 percent believe he is the artist Robert Del Naja.

The day after the event, Banksy released a quick video revealing how he did it.

Internet sleuths located another image of the incident, showing a man with a camera phone videoing it.

The Art Newspaper's correspondent Anny Shaw, who was in the auction room, said that while the shredding may have been an "inside job" it certainly looked like a surprise.
