10 kids diagnosed with rare polio-like illness in IL

Illinois Department of Health officials were investigating this week after nine "sporadic" cases of children diagnosed with a new polio-like illness were reported and confirmed within the state.

The reported IL cases are preliminary diagnoses and only the U.S. Centers for Disease Control can confirm the diagnosis, according to Arnold.

Two children in IL have been diagnosed with a rare Polio-like illness that is seeing a sudden uptick, mainly in kids, across the US.

According to UH, AFM is a rare condition that attacks the nervous system, specifically the spinal cord, and can cause paralysis. Recently, Minnesota state officials also put out an alert after receiving reports of six recent AFM cases involving children. Until then, doctors are treating the cases as if they are AFM.

The CDC began tracking the cases in 2014 after seeing an uptick in the number of cases.

All told, 16 states have confirmed a total of 38 cases of acute flaccid myelitis in 2018. Those who contract AFM face paralysis, long-term health problems and even death.

"If their child gets an enteroviral infection, they need to look for symptoms such as sudden onset of arm and leg weakness, difficulty swallowing. Since 2015, four cases reviewed by CDC experts have been counted in IL", the IDHP stated.
