At least one person was killed and more than 20 were injured in Massachusetts Thursday after a series of gas explosions tore through several communities outside Boston, officials said.

"Lawrence is a very resilient community".

With a backpack filled with personal items he had hastily grabbed, he said he'd head to his mother's home a few towns over for the night.

All customers of Columbia Gas have been warned of possible further explosions. He mentioned difficulties such as getting into people's homes.

As for criticism, he said the company has been "using all our resources. we want to restore service to all our customers". The club owner and the gas company eventually settled the case.

Massachusetts State Police are urging anyone whose homes are serviced by Columbia Gas in the area to evacuate, snarling traffic and causing widespread confusion as residents and local officials struggle to understand what was happening.

More than 85,000 homes in the state are without power. Columbia Gas was working to depressurize its gas lines, which "will take some time", while National Grid cut electricity to the three towns "to limit spark-started fires".

At least 30 homes and businesses caught fire in Andover, and active fires were reported in Lawrence as of early Friday morning, several hours after initial reports surfaced, fire officials said. "One patient has been transported to another hospital", the Lawrence hospital said in a Facebook post.

He declared a state of emergency in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover and said that allows him to put Eversource - "the organization that we want to have manage this effort".

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said it appeared the gas lines had become over-pressurised.

Minutes later, he said he heard a loud booming sound from his neighbor's house.

NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said it would likely take investigators some time to examine the pipeline's design, maintenance and upgrades. "We know that all those fires at this point are out".

Asked about Baker's comments, NiSource spokesman Ken Stammen referred to statements from Columbia Gas President Steve Bryant, who spoke to reporters at a separate news conference after Baker's.

Columbia had announced earlier Thursday that it would be upgrading gas lines in neighbourhoods across the state, including the area where the explosions happened.

The share-price decline reflects concerns about potentially higher NiSource spending and penalties, said Morningstar analyst Charles Fishman.

"Our thoughts and continued support are with those who have been injured and affected".

The residents of the three communities north of Boston, serviced by Columbia Gas, have been ordered to evacuate after a reported gas line rupture triggered a series of violent explosions.

Eighteen-year-old Leonel Rondon died when his vehicle was crushed by a falling chimney, a spokeswoman for the Essex County District Attorney's office said.

A hospital in Lawrence says it's treating six people injured in fires and explosions.

Guilia Holland, a 35-year-old mechanic in a wheelchair, said she had just gotten off a bus returning home when she saw "a big flash of light" at the house where she had been renting a room for a month. "And God forbid you go to sleep and not wake up tomorrow".

"Utility technicians must do their jobs in order to make sure everyone has a safe place to return to", Baker said. "Once that's complete, we will work with federal government and others to investigate how this occurred and hold the appropriate parties accountable for their actions".
