Review underway for Russia probe documents ordered released

One of those sections appears to relate to the time period that Page worked on Trump's campaign as a foreign policy adviser.

US President Donald Trump has directed the Justice Department to immediately declassify more information related to the investigation into possible election meddling by Russian Federation, the White House said on Monday (Sep 17).

While President Trump declassifying documents "at the request of a number of committees of Congress, and for reasons of transparency", may sound like routine presidential behavior, the directive announced by White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Monday afternoon was actually a dramatic escalation of his attempts to undermine Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Finally, Trump directed the Justice Department to release, without redactions, text messages relating to the Russian Federation probe from former FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and other officials, including FBI agent Peter Strzok.

On the other hand, The Wall Street Journal reports, "legal experts and former government officials said the move represented an extraordinary level of presidential involvement in an investigation that has notched guilty pleas from five of Mr. Trump's associates", including his former campaign chairman and vice-chairman and his national security adviser.

It was not immediately clear when or how the documents would be released. The lawmakers believe that the top secret documents, which became the basis for the investigation of allegations of collusion between Trump's campaign headquarters and the Russian authorities, should be made public.

The documents that Trump demanded be declassified included several pages of a June 2017 FISA renewal application for a warrant ultimately granted to surveil former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page, along with all Federal Bureau of Investigation interviews and reports connected to the Page FISA application.

However, details to date have largely confirmed that investigatory agencies conformed to previous standards before the FISA court, including identifying any bias in sources of information on which a surveillance application relies.

According to the redacted version, three of the declassified pages involve information included in a section titled "The Russian Government's Coordinated Efforts to Influence the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election".

Watters said the documents could show proof of "political persecution" of President Trump and his allies.

"The case should never have been allowed to be brought", Trump added.

House Intelligence Committee ranking member Adam Schiff said in a statement: "President Trump, in a clear abuse of power, has made a decision to intervene in a pending law enforcement investigation by ordering the selective release of materials he believes are helpful to his defence team and thinks will advance a false narrative".
