NEO volunteers headed to help Flo victims, more to be sent

Twice the size of Louisiana, Florence is inundating communities and leaving hundreds of thousands without power.

A Dubuque woman working with the Red Cross is in Florence, South Carolina making sure supplies are going where they're needed.

More than 17,000 people sought refuge in over 240 Red Cross and community shelters to escape the storm's wrath. View some of their stories here. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is preparing to accept any adoptable pets from the area so that pets lost in the hurricane can stay in local shelters.

Flooding is so bad that North Carolina's Department of Transportation has issued an advisory recommending people do not travel in parts of the state. That includes providing food, shelter, relief supplies, emotional support and recovery planning.

By Friday evening, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm, its winds weakening to 70 miles per hour as it pushed inland. It's happening in a region in need of help and crews from Washington that traveled to the area say they are ready.

Kroger is partnering with the American Red Cross to provide aid to those affected by Florence, starting Monday, September 17th.

A Red Cross volunteer from Oahu has been sent to SC to support sheltering operations after Tropical Storm Florence. The best way to help those affected by Florence is by donating to the following organizations. Roughly 3,800 uncollected blood and platelet donations were not made due to the canceled drives.
