Hurricane Florence brings flooding and blackouts

There have already been 360 rescues in New Bern, North Carolina since Hurricane Florence made landfall on Friday morning.

The City of New Bern said in a tweet before dawn Friday that there were about 150 people who still needed swift-water rescue. "Really all you could do is stay inside and hope for the best". "Persons located within these areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions", the hurricane center briefing said.

Officials have warned that the life-threatening storm could come with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90mph and carries a risk of "catastrophic" flooding. "The larger and the slower the storm is, the greater the threat and the impact-and we have that".

A North Carolina city says about 70 people have been rescued from a hotel whose structural integrity is being threatened by Hurricane Florence. On the forecast track, the centre of the storm is expected to move inland across extreme southeastern North Carolina and extreme eastern South Carolina Friday and Saturday.

In Wilmington, the storm tore down numerous trees when its centre tore through the area Friday morning.

It is now a tropical storm with top sustained winds of 90 miles per hour (150 kph), but a gust of 112 miles per hour (180 kph) was reported just offshore. The storm continues to very slowly move west and inland, and will continue to impact the region through the weekend. The system is expected to bring its gusty winds, which extend some 140 miles from its center, and heavy rains to the Azores, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane Florence is now located about 15 miles north-northeast of Myrtle Beach, North Carolina. "The storm is wreaking havoc on our state".

Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m.at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the SC line, coming ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.

Officials in several states have declared states of emergency, including in the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia and Maryland, where coastal areas are still recovering from summer storms.

New Bern, home to approximately 30,000 people, sits about 37 miles northeast of Jacksonville, North Carolina, on the banks of the Neuse River.

It was expected to begin pushing its way westward across SC later in the day, in a watery siege that could go on all weekend.

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm.
