Florence expected to bring 'catastrophic' flooding to Carolinas

Don't be fooled by Hurricane Florence's weakening category - the powerful storm still poses the same dangers at a Category 2 as it did as a Category 4, the forecasts show.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper called Florence an "uninvited brute" that could wipe out entire communities as it grinds across the state.

Its outer bands arrived here on Thursday morning, and its wind and rain quickly began to punish this part of the North Carolina coast with a slow-moving, relentless onslaught.

The National Hurricane Center said late Thursday that Florence has brought a life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds to the North Carolina Coast.

Avair Vereen, her fiance and one of her seven children at a shelter in Conway, South Carolina yesterday as several states along the USA eastern coast were bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Florence.

The center said the threat of freshwater flooding will increase over the next several days.

Southeastern coastal North Carolina into far northeastern SC could see 20 to 30 inches of rainfall; some isolated areas could see 40 inches.

By mid-afternoon the winds had dropped to 75 miles per hour (120 kph) and the centre was moving west at 6 miles per hour (10 kph), the NHC said, and parts of North and SC would get as much as 40 inches of rain (1 metre).

It is the storm's movement and not its strength that has forecasters and officials anxious.

Authorities said more than 60 people, including many children and pets, had to be evacuated from a hotel in Jacksonville, North Carolina, after strong winds caused parts of the roof to collapse.

The hurricane center said the large amount of rainfall "will produce catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding".

Members of the Missouri Search and Rescue, part of FEMA, unload their gear at a staging area as Hurricane Florence starts to make landfall in Lealand, North Carolina, Sept. 13, 2018. Millions of people are expected to lose power from the storm and restoration could take weeks. Thousands have taken refuge in emergency shelters, officials said.

The path of Hurricane Florence sees it going over some of the poorest areas on the eastern seaboard.

Florence's top winds were clocked on Thursday evening at 90 miles per hour (150 km/h) as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean, down from a peak of 140 miles per hour (224 km/h) earlier this week when it was classified a Category 4 storm. It has also moved most ships, submarines and planes out their base at Hampton Roads, Virginia, to safety far at sea or in distant airbases.

A man also died while plugging in a generator in Pender County, and rescue crews were unable to reach a woman who had suffered a heart attack.

"It is imperative that everyone follow local evacuation orders".

More than 80,000 people were already without power as the storm approached, and more than 12,000 were in shelters.

The 2.6-magnitude quake was the state's fifth this year.
