Flooding from Florence swamps neighborhoods

Florence crashed ashore Friday morning in North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, and it has wiped out power to about 796,000 customers in that state and SC, reports CNN.

Federal data show there were roughly 5.1 million active flood insurance policies in the U.S.as of July 31, up from 4.94 million a year earlier.

"Not only are you going to see more impact across North Carolina. but we're also anticipating you are about to see a lot of damage going through West Virginia, all the way up to OH as the system exits out", Brock Long of the country's Federal Emergency Management Agency said Sunday on Fox News.

The storm's death toll climbed to 14 when a man drowned after a pickup truck flipped into a drainage ditch along a flooded road in SC.

Forecasters fear that the coming days could bring the worst flooding in North Carolina's history as rivers swell towards record levels.

But the storm was shaping up as a two-part disaster, with the second, delayed-action stage consisting of inland flooding, caused by rainwater working its way into rivers and streams.

"If the river rises to the level they say it's going to, then this warehouse is going to be under water", he said.

Florence, a onetime hurricane that weakened to a tropical depression by Sunday, dumped up to 40 inches (100 cm) of rain on parts of North Carolina since Thursday, and continued to produce widespread heavy rain over much of North Carolina and eastern SC, the National Weather Service said.

Members of the North Carolina Task Force urban search and rescue team wade through a flooded neighborhood looking for residents who stayed behind as Florence continues to dump heavy rain in Fayetteville, N.C., Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018.

A total of about 761,000 homes and businesses were without power on Sunday in North and SC and surrounding states, down from a peak of almost 1 million.

Almost 1 million people had lost power as of Saturday.

North Carolina officials have reported at least seven storm-related fatalities with unconfirmed reports of a further three deaths. "They have not even begun (to crest)".

Heller said that most of the impact in NY from the storm will be rain.

"We were stir-crazy from being inside so long", Moore said.

On Sunday, Florence claimed a 14th victim, a man who drowned when a pickup truck flipped into a drainage ditch in SC, and a 15th, after a pickup truck veered off a road and struck an overpass support beam in SC.

"I'm not going to waste my time". As rivers keep rising and rains keep falling, the flooding will spread.

The US's highest emergency official said other states were in the path of Florence. Residents across North Carolina are still struggling to rebuild after devastating flooding during Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

In the town of New Bern, homes were completely surrounded by water, and rescuers had to use inflatable boats to reach people.

National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said radar and rain gauges indicated some areas got as much as 762mm of rain, which he called "absolutely staggering".
