Ex-Trump aide Manafort tentatively agrees to plea deal

Paul Manafort has tentatively reached a plea deal with the special counsel Robert Mueller, ABC News reported on Thursday.

It remains unclear if the deal will include Manafort cooperating with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign. A spokesperson for Manafort declined to comment.

The report of a tentative deal comes days before jury selection is expected to begin for Manafort's trial in D.C., which is set to kick off with opening statements on September 24.

"Manafort and his most senior defense attorneys spent more than four hours Thursday in discussions with a team of special prosecutors who are involved in the ongoing investigation into whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation", the report says.

Manafort's D.C. case includes charges of alleged conspiracy, failing to register as a foreign agent and witness tampering.

Russia bombers off Alaska intercepted by U.S. fighter jets
Air Force says two of its fighter jets have intercepted and monitored Russian bombers in global air space west of mainland Alaska. Terrance O'Shaughnessy says radar, satellites and fighter jets are used to identify aircraft and determine appropriate responses.

Joshua Dressler, a law professor at Ohio State University, said it made sense that Manafort, 69, was considering cutting his losses and avoiding the time and money needed to defend himself against a second trial.

Four former Trump aides have pleaded guilty to charges related to the special counsel investigation: Michael Cohen, the president's longtime personal lawyer; Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser; Rick Gates, the former deputy campaign chairman; and George Papadopoulos, a former campaign adviser.

Those charges are the subject of the current plea deal. One of the prosecutors, Andrew Weissman, confirmed in court that Manafort was cooperating with the government's investigation. A prosecutor who secured convictions against him in Virginia and works with the US Attorney's Office there - not the special counsel's office - was also there Thursday, meaning that others outside his DC trial are still working on the case.

Manafort has not yet entered a new plea before the judge and prosecutors have not yet revealed the terms of any deal reached with him. Opening statements for trial number two are still scheduled (until we learn officially that there won't be a trial) for September 24.

Trump discussed with his lawyers earlier this summer a possible pardon for Manafort, Trump's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, has told NPR.
