Eliud Kipchoge breaks marathon record in Berlin

"I lack words to describe this day", Kipchoge said. But what more it more impressive still was the fact that Kipchoge had to run the last 17 kilometres (10.5 miles) alone after his pacemakers dropped out early.

In the men's race, second place went to is Amos Kipruto (KENYA) with 2:06:23 and third is Wilson Kipsang (KENYA) with 2:06:48.

Kipchoge came agonizingly close to sporting immortality by almost running the first sub two-hour marathon previous year.

"So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", said Kipchoge, who had won in Berlin in 2015 and 2017.

Another Kenyan also claimed victory among the female racers: 35-year-old Gladys Cherono posted the time of 2:18:34, ahead of two Ethiopians, Ruti Aga with 2:18:34 and Tirunesh Dibabawith 2:18:55.

Race organisers initially timed Kipchoge a second slower, but later corrected the time.

The 33-year-old broke the previous world record set in Berlin by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto in 2014 by one minute and 18 seconds.

He has now won 11 out of 12 marathons he raced in, including at the Olympics.

Florence, a wet and unwanted visitor, besieges Carolinas
At least four deaths have been reported in North Carolina and more than 720,000 people are without power. About a million customers in the two states are without power, the New York Times reports .

Boosted after leaving Boit, he surged, running the 27th kilometre in just 2:51 - seven seconds faster than necessary.

"Kipchoge hit the half way mark with one pacesetter in 57:26 minutes, way inside Kimetto world record by one minute and nine seconds before hitting 1:26:45 against Kimetto's 1" 27:38 at 30km mark.

Kipchoge passed under the Brandenburg Gate with 400m to run and powered down the finishing chute to complete the greatest marathon ever run in 2:01:39.

The Newspaper added: "When Kipchoge actually enters a race, he sends ripples through the field before his races even begin".

The previous track record was set by Mizuki Noguchi of Japan 13 years ago.

Kipchoge won his marathon debut in Hamburg in the spring of 2013 running 2:05:30.

With weather conditions ideal and virtually no wind, it was clear after the opening few kilometres that Kipchoge's only opponent would be the clock and his three pacemakers were pushed to the limit to keep the tempo high as Kipchoge dipped well below world-record time by the halfway mark.
