Border Patrol Agent Arrested in Suspected Serial Killings

A longtime U.S. Border Patrol agent is being called a "serial killer" after he was arrested and charged with the murder of four women in southern Texas on Saturday.

Agent Ortiz is now in custody in the Webb County Sheriff's Office jail and stands charged with four counts of murder and a single count of aggravated kidnapping, Sheriff Cuellar stated. Two of the victims were found earlier this month along Interstate 35 in rural northwest Webb County, the Laredo Morning Times reports. Cops arrested him in his auto in a hotel parking lot at 2am.

The 10-year Border Patrol veteran fled state troopers and was found hiding in a truck in a hotel parking lot in Laredo, Texas around 2am.

Authorities said that nearly had no doubt that Ortiz was behind the gruesome acts, with Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuelllar stating that police are in possession of "very strong evidence" implicating Ortiz.

A U.S. Border Patrol agent was arrested in South Texas on Saturday in connection with a calculated killing rampage that left four people dead in recent weeks around the city of Laredo, the authorities said.

'It's interesting that he would be observing and watching as law enforcement was looking for the killer, that he would be reporting to work every day like normal, ' Alaniz said. Cuellar said investigators believe Ortiz acted alone.

On Thursday he claimed that the death toll in Puerto Rico was a Democratic ploy to "make me look as bad as possible". Whether those statements will be enough in an election that is shaping up to be all about the president is unknown.

Two of the victims were found earlier on Saturday and on Friday evening.

"We want to reassure the citizens of Laredo that the community and your families are safe", the Laredo Police Department said in a statement on Saturday afternoon, according to the Houston Chronicle. Federal prosecutors said the agent, Salvador Contreras, 50, sent child-porn images to an undercover agent whom Contreras believed was the mother of 8-year-old and 14-year-old girls.

"The manner in which they were killed is similar in all the cases from the evidence", said Alaniz. The other victims' identities have not yet been released.

In a statement, Andrew Meehan, assistant commissioner for public affairs for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said his agency is fully cooperating with all investigators.

Police identified one of the victims as 29-year-old Melissa Ramirez of Laredo.
