Australians told to chop strawberries as police investigate needles found in fruit

"The contamination relates to what appears to be needles inserted in strawberries".

"Coles will be working with growers and suppliers to offer support and will ensure that when supply recommences all strawberry punnets are fully inspected before they are sent to supermarkets".

Authorities in Australia on Thursday said they had four confirmed incidents of "contaminated strawberries" after an individual reportedly discovered a needle inside a berry after taking a bite.

Some Australians have posted photos on social media showing needles they found in their berries.

One man was taken to hospital after eating a strawberry with a needle inside.

"Whereas we would normally be selling 30 tonnes a day of locally grown strawberries to WA markets, it has dropped to 20 tonnes".

The Queensland government is now offering a $100,000 reward for any information that will help police catch those behind the strawberry needle sabotage scandal.

ABC reported that as consumers have shied away from purchasing the fruit over fears it will be contaminated with needles, farmers have ended up throwing out mass quantities of the strawberries they can't sell.

A nationwide recall is now in place for six strawberry brands.

.

Jennifer Rowling of the Queensland Strawberry Growers' Association said she believed the strawberries had been "interfered with".

But on Saturday, Queensland Acting Chief Superintendent Terry Lawrence told reporters that suspicion is "something we don't subscribe to".

"These further instances are cases in which needles have been found within the strawberries and people have gone to eat them, have cut them up and found the needles".

"How could any right-minded person want to put a baby or a child or anybody's health at risk by doing such a awful act?" she asked.
