Maryland accepts responsibility for Jordan McNair's death

Officials at the University of Maryland are accepting blame for the death of football player Jordan McNair.

"As a father, there are no words to Jordan's parents that are good enough", he said.

McNair family attorney Billy Murphy said McNair suffered a seizure at 5 p.m. on May 29, but claims that no coach or school staff member called 911 until an hour later. Other safeguard actions that should have been taken were not.

Court, who posted his resignation letter on Twitter, "contributed to an environment based on fear and intimidation, including throwing objects and small weights in the direction of players", sources told ESPN.

Head coach Durkin, who was hired by Maryland two years ago, was placed on administrative leave Saturday following a report published on ESPN about the football program's "toxic culture", in which players accused football coaching staff of verbal abuse and humiliation.

Athletic director Damon Evans said Tuesday that Rick Court is no longer associated with the program.

"We have looked at the preliminary observations that were given to me and others", Loh said, "and some of our policies and protocols do not conform to best practices".

Evans said trainers did not properly diagnose McNair as suffering from heat illness, never took his temperature and did not apply cold-water immersion treatment.

"We have learned that Jordan did not receive appropriate medical care, and mistakes were made by some of our athletic training personnel", Evans said. "We will honor Jordan's life, and we will ensure that a tragedy such as this never happens on our campus again".

Durkin was present at the May 29 workout, though the drills were run by Court and his staff. Hospital medical records suggest that McNair still had a body temperature measuring 106 degrees almost 40 minutes after a 911 call was placed to report his condition.

The hospital records say McNair initially showed symptoms of heatstroke 45 minutes into the teams workout, which began at 4:15 p.m. — more than 90 minutes before his body temperature was successfully lowered at Washington Adventist Hospital in Takoma Park.

"No Maryland student-athlete will ever be in a situation where his or her life and safety. will be at risk, especially when that risk is foreseeable".

A four-person commission - which includes retired judges, a lawyer experienced with handling NCAA integrity issues and a former football coach - will review "the practices and the culture" of the football team in the wake of allegations in a recent ESPN report, Loh said. Wes Robinson, the head football trainer, and Steve Nordwall, director of athletic training, were placed on administrative leave August 10, according to ESPN.
