Local aviation expert weighs in on Seattle plane theft and crash

They intercepted the plane near Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

"This is probably jail time for life, huh?" he later asks, according to a recording provided by the Seattle Times.

The Pierce County Sheriff's Office said the man, who has been identified as Richard Russell, was 29 years old and "suicidal".

Later the man said: "I've got a lot of people that care about me".

"Got a few screws loose, I guess", Russell is heard saying in the recording.

A Horizon Air passenger plane has crashed on Ketron Island south of Seattle after being stolen by an airline employee at SeaTac Airport around 8 pm on Friday.

He flew it for an hour, followed by two armed F-15 jets from OR that the military scrambled, before he crashed.

Ed Troyer, Public Information Officer for the Pierce County Sheriff's Department confirmed on Twitter that the pilot of the plane was a "suicidal male".

Sheriff's department officials said they were working to conduct a background investigation on the Pierce County resident.

Alaska Airlines executives said at a news conference at Sea-Tac late Saturday morning that the employee who took the plane was authorized to be both on the tarmac and inside planes and that not security protocols were violated.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Sullivan's order meant the taxpayer wound up paying for a needless round-trip flight. Two of the children and their mothers were deported before the suit was filed; the rest were being detained in Texas and NY .

"Our hearts are with the family of the individual aboard, along with all of our Alaska Air and Horizon Air employees", the airline said in a video statement posted to Twitter early Saturday.

Video showed the Horizon Air Q400, a turboprop plane that seats 76 people, doing large loops and other unsafe manoeuvres as the sun set on Puget Sound.

"We have multiple 911 calls, over 30, reporting a fireball", Troyer said. For one, the man shouldn't have been able to board the plane alone, he said.

Coaches at Wasilla High School in Alaska, where Russell was a football player, wrestler and discus thrower, told the Anchorage Daily News they are shocked at the news.

They called a second alarm, Adams said, to get more crews out to the island. They also said he didn't have a pilot's license, and that it is unclear how he attained the skills to do loops in the aircraft before crashing about an hour after taking off. "Never really knew it, until now", Richard Russell said at one point.

"Well", a controller responds, "we're not going to worry or think about that".

Kelly says someone on the ground or in the air traffic control tower should've noticed a plane was being moved when it shouldn't have been, but it took several minutes for that to happen, allowing the 29-year-old worker to take the plane into the air.

Ground service agents direct aircraft for takeoff and gate approach and de-ice planes, as well as handle baggage.

"Safety is our number one goal", Alaska Airlines chief executive Brad Tilden said.

"He was a nice guy", Kaelin said. "But holy smokes, I got to stop looking at the fuel, because it's going down quick". He has 11 years of flying under his belt to find out how hard it is to pilot a plane with no experience. Near the end of the video, you can also see the aftermath of the crash.
