Iraq's PM retracts his commitment to USA sanctions on Iran

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said Saturday they had killed at least 10 members of a "terrorist team" who entered the country from Iraq the previous night.

Last week, al-Abadi came in for criticism - both by Iranian officials and Iraqi Shia political blocs - after announcing his intention to implement all of Washington's sanctions on Tehran. "We will not interact with them or support them but we will abide by them", Abadi said.

"We consider them (sanctions on Iran) a strategic mistake and incorrect but we will abide by them to protect the interests of our people".

"We usually announce a state visit by publishing a statement at least two days before it is scheduled to take place, and in this case we haven't done that and we can not announce its cancellation", Saad Al Hadithi told The National, adding that Mr Al Abadi has no planned visits to Iran.

On Sunday, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's representative in Baghdad lashed out at Abadi as the Tehran visit was called off.

The administration says the renewed sanctions are meant to pressure Tehran to halt its alleged support for global terrorism, its military activity in the Middle East and its ballistic missile programs.

Former Iranian interior minister, Abdullah Ramadan Zadeh, called on Friday on his country not to oppose dividing Iraq ahead of the imposition of United States sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

"It's a disloyal attitude towards the honest position of Iran and the blood of the martyrs this country has spilt to defend the land of Iraq" against jihadists, said Moujtaba al-Hussein.

However just last week Mr al-Abadi suggested Iraq would abide by the sanctions, despite disagreeing with them.

Iraq is the second largest importer of Iranian products, aside from fuel, with total imports reaching about $6 billion past year.

Iraqi provinces bordering Iran depend heavily on the Islamic Republic for their electricity supply.

Under the 2015 deal, the United States agreed to lift the crippling economic sanctions on Iran in exchange for a halt to Iran's controversial nuclear program and the access of worldwide inspectors to relevant facilities.
