Grappling with tweet aftermath, Musk acknowledges exhaustion

On the tweet where Musk said he was considering taking Tesla private, which is now being investigated by the SEC, he said it was an attempt at transparency.

Normally known for his brash and unorthodox leadership style, Musk was, at points, penitent and self-reflective, acknowledging the headaches some of his more recent public behavior have caused for his company, its board members, and its shareholders.

In a revealing interview with The New York Times published Thursday night, Musk talked about his gruelling work schedule, the struggle to crank out his company's first mass-market electric vehicle - the Model 3 sedan - and the fallout over his public declarations about taking Tesla private. An interview that, among other things, reveals the once high-flying businessman has taken to calling this year "the most hard and painful" of his career and that "the worst is yet to come".

During the interview, journalists said Musk alternated between laughter and tears as he opened up about his busy work routine and recent controversies. Musk agreed not to tweet again on Tesla's possible privatization without discussing it with the board, the spokeswoman said.

The Times went on to claim some board members believed Musk occasionally used recreational drugs. Musk said that during the meeting the fund's Managing Director "strongly expressed his support for funding a going private transaction". Honest and raw quotes from Elon Musk, such as his statement that "from a personal pain standpoint, the worst is yet to come" despite Tesla's progress in its operations, painted a rather gloomy picture of the company - particularly its leader.

Among Musk's explanations for the way he handled things is that he had seen his remarks as a good-faith effort to be transparent with his company's stakeholders.

Bringing the depravity of the situation to the surface, Musk said that he has not taken leaves of more than a week from work since 2001.

In the first tweet, he said he was considering taking Tesla private at $420 a share and that he had secured funding.

Tesla is searching for a COO or other No. 2 to take some duties and stress off of Musk, the NYT said. "I was not on weed, to be clear", Musk said.

On Monday, the Tesla boss explained in a blog post that his much scrutinized statements about financing were based on his conversations with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund and other investors. "I've had friends come by who are really concerned", Musk told The Times.

"They're not dumb guys, but they're not supersmart", Musk told the Times.

"Weed is not helpful for productivity".

The 47-year-old billionaire CEO of SpaceX and Tesla has had a turbulent 12 months. Musk spent nights at Tesla's Fremont, California, factory working out production problems on its new Model 3 auto that is supposed to take Tesla from niche luxury carmaker to a mass producer that competes with Detroit.

'It is often a choice of no sleep or Ambien, ' he told the New York Times.

After the Saudi fund has bought nearly 5% of Tesla stock through the public markets, Musk revisited the offer.

Hansen alleges Tesla failed to disclose that it received written notice from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration about a Tesla employee possibly engaged in selling cocaine and crystal methamphetamine from the Nevada factory on behalf of a Mexican drug cartel, according to Meissner who did not release the whistleblower filing he said his client made to the SEC.
