Four-time WNBA champ, Lynx PG Lindsay Whalen, is retiring

"At season's end Lindsay Whalen will retire as the winningest point guard in the history of the WNBA", said Head Coach and General Manager Cheryl Reeve.

Four-time WNBA champion Lindsay Whalen announced Monday she will retire at the end of the Minnesota Lynx's season.

Earlier this year, Whalen, a former star at Hutchinson (Minn.) High School, was named the new head coach of the University of Minnesota Gophers women's basketball team.

While the Sun would continue to rack up victories - CT finished below.500 just once during Whalen's six-year run - they would not make it back to the WNBA Finals prior Whalen's departure in 2010 and have not made it there since she's been gone. She's retiring as the WNBA's all-time wins leader with 322.

Bears agree to rookie deal with Roquan Smith after long holdout
It'll be tougher for Smith, who has more play-calling duties as a middle linebacker and has missed some key practice time. Selected with the eighth overall pick in the draft, Smith had been the last unsigned rookie in the NFL.

Before being drafted into the WNBA, Whalen was a star player for Minnesota, where she led a program that had just one NCAA Tournament appearance before her arrival into a Final Four team.

While Whalen's talent and on-court toughness made her a WNBA All-Star, there are also intangibles that contributed to her success.

Whalen has appeared in a Final Four, has two Olympic gold medals, and eight total appearances in the WNBA Finals. "I look forward to the next chapter in my basketball career and wish my Lynx coaches and teammates all of the best in the future".

The Lynx are 200-80 in the regular season since Whalen arrived, having only missed the playoffs once. She's averaged 11.5 points, 4.9 assists and 3.8 rebounds in her career so far. They've already clinched a playoff spot with a 17-14 record, so it's possible Whalen helps Minnesota to one last WNBA championship before all is said and done. Those are two enormous accomplishments that point to her ability to make her teammates better.
