Local newspaper Diario de Ibiza reported that Ronaldo had been taken to hospital with pneumonia.

He was then transferred to a private hospital, and remains there, though he is reportedly making progress.

Staff at Can Misses Hospital said they were unable to give out any information for "data protection reasons".

Ronaldo, regarded as one of the world's best-ever players, owns a house in Ibiza and is a regular visitor to the island.

Ronaldo is said to own property on the Spanish Island and is believed to be visiting on holiday.

Ben Chilwell: 'Harry Maguire will not leave in January'
Manchester United are lining up a late £65m bid to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City before Thursday's transfer deadline, according to reports in the British media.

Considered one of the best strikers of his generation, Ronaldo played for a host of top European clubs including Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Barcelona.

Symptoms - which include a cough and difficulty breathing - can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours. Two of those were the only ones that Brazil scored against Germany in the 2002 World Cup final.

In his latter years he battled with overweight because of a thyroid problem.

During his glittering career Ronaldo won the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times, in 1996, 1997, and 2002.
