Bears agree to rookie deal with Roquan Smith after long holdout

Per reports from the NFL Network and ESPN, the Bears have come to terms on a contract with the linebacker on a rookie contract that will end his holdout. Bears coach Matt Nagy told the Associated Press Sunday that Smith's holdout is limiting his chances of playing in Week 1 of the regular season.

Roquan Smith is no longer the Rogue One.

But almost four months after Chicago drafted Smith back in April, a deal is finally done, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Twitter. The Bears had previously conceded over language involving penalties for personal fouls within a play such as the new helmet-contact rules implemented this season. While it sounds insane the Jaguars would have to verbalize that, players apparently have yet something else to worry about when it comes to their contracts.

Selected with the eighth overall pick in the draft, Smith had been the last unsigned rookie in the NFL. It'll be tougher for Smith, who has more play-calling duties as a middle linebacker and has missed some key practice time.

Smith missed all of training camp, but the deal is likely to be finalized in time for him to join the team for its joint practices against the Broncos beginning Wednesday in Englewood, Colo.

Chicago took Smith with the No. 8 pick in April's draft.

Because of how talented Smith is and the fact that he's a day one starter, there was a lot of pressure within the organization to get this deal done as soon as possible.
