Bacteria in dog saliva causes man to lose limbs

Blood tests revealed that a bacterial pathogen found in saliva of healthy dogs and cats had caused the infection. His case is particularly unlucky because for the infection to be passed on the dog usually has to bite you. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the bacteria Capnocytophaga live in the mouths of dogs and cats.

"Rarely, Capnocytophaga species can spread to humans through bites, scratches, or close contact from a dog or cat and cause illness".

"It hit him with a vengeance", she said. Once they arrived, Dawn Manteufel said she noticed bruises - several of them, all over his body - that weren't there when they left their house just five minutes earlier. "Looked like someone beat him up with a baseball bat".

Doctor's told the outlet they believe the bacteria that infected Manteufel came from his dog, Ellie.

Within a week of being in the hospital, doctors first amputated Greg's feet and then his legs up to his kneecaps.

A 48-year-old is the latest victim of a flesh-eating bacteria that forced him to have all of his limbs amputated. Surgery is scheduled to remove a portion of both hands as the damage from the sepsis is to extensive.

Juventus & AC Milan: Winners & Losers of Higuain/Bonucci swap
The Juve star's brother and agent, Nicolas, was at Casa Milan earlier this week to meet with their new GM Leonardo . The move will be a straight swap, both players being mutually valued by their current clubs at €35m (£31m/$40.8m).

"We can't wrap our heads around it that all of the sudden, he's 48 years old and been around dogs all of his life. and this happens", said Dawn Manteufel. Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price, an infectious disease specialist with Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin, told the station the infection got into his blood and "triggered a very severe response in his body". "It's just chance", Dr. Munoz-Price added. The people most at risk for this infection are those with weakened immune systems, according to the CDC.

Manteufel's family has already raised over $18,000 through a GoFundMe page focused on taking care of the West Bend man's upcoming plastic surgeries.

'[He] kept saying to the doctors: "Take what you need but keep me alive".

The family set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for future surgeries, therapy and hand and leg prosthetics. Writing in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports, they said she developed confusion, a headache, diarrhea, a high fever, and eventually sepsis and organ failure.

The family has raised nearly $22,000 or their $25,000 goal on this GoFundMe page.
